If you’re curious to know why kids need to keep up on oral hygiene, then our dentist, Dr. Matt Swan, is happy to tell you why. Brushing, flossing, rinsing and attending checkups can help your child’s smile in a myriad of ways. This is why it’s best to have your child brush twice a day, floss daily, rinse with mouthwash daily (depending on the age) and attend their checkups every six months. Oral hygiene is important and recommended because:
-It can teach them how to care for their smile now and in the future. By starting an oral hygiene routine at an early age, they learn how to properly clean their teeth and gums, which can help them clean their teeth and gums as they grow older. Starting early can also help your child understand that it’s important and it should be a top priority throughout their life.
-It can help them avoid dental issues. Cleaning the smile regularly can help eliminate bacteria in the mouth that promote dental issues, like cavities and gum disease. It’s important to remove the bacteria often. Unfortunately, your child’s smile can be vulnerable to problems as an infant.
-It canhelp them maintain healthy primary teeth. Primary teeth are very important. In fact, they help your child talk and eat. They also reserve a space in the smile for the permanent teeth that lie underneath, waiting to erupt. It’s important to keep those primary teeth in tip-top shape, even though they fall out of the mouth eventually.
